What is VaihAyasa Aerial Yoga?
VaihAyasa is Sanskrit for “being or moving in the air, suspended in the air, sky-dwellers.” An appropriate name for the newest style of Aerial Yoga that combines the fun of other playful acrobatic aerial, with the more grounding and alignment-centered details of more yogic aerial. It is a smooth merger of both extremes of the aerial yoga world that allows practitioners to sink into their practice more quickly, to deepen stretches, to find proper alignment naturally, and to reap the benefits of inversions without strain on the joints of the body. Aerial Yoga allows practitioners to invert without strain to the neck or joints, allowing for surrender into a posture and full benefits. You will find that your mind clears, shifting to become open, aware, present.
In VaihAyasa Aerial Yoga a soft fabric hammock, supporting up to 1000 lbs, suspended a few feet off the ground, is used to move through traditional & non-traditional Hatha Yoga poses. Used as a prop, the hammock assists alignment, deepens awareness and provides immediate benefits of spinal decompression. With the weight of the body partially or fully supported along with the help of gravity and the fabric, space is naturally created in the body without effort.
Some Aerial Yoga postures are geared at helping students better understand the proper alignment of traditional Yoga postures, and some are meant to help students achieve advanced traditional Yoga postures which may not otherwise be available to a student.
What Happens In a Typical Class?
While practicing VaihAyasa Aerial Yoga, students will move through the same basic elements of a floor practice (pranayama, asanas, savasana), accept that they will be elevated in the fabric or using the fabric for alignment for the entire class. Some postures will involve only partial support from the hammock, while others will require complete trust in the fabric as it supports 100% of the body weight. Begin with an Intro class which will cover all of the basic wraps of VaihAyasa Aerial Yoga, & expand into more advanced classes that explore variations & flows that will deepen your practice & keep your inner child wanting more.

How Do I Prepare for an Aerial Yoga Class?
You can bring a yoga mat to class, but it is not necessary. Wear a shirt that covers your underarms completely. Bring a large towel or thick sweatshirt for padding until you are used to the feeling of the fabric. Do not use hand lotion or sunscreen before class. Do not wear jewelry, belts, or clothing with grommets, gems, or anything that could potentially snag the fabric. Avoid lose shorts or very baggy clothing. Make sure your leggings are opaque. Please trim your finger and toenails. Eating or drinking is never recommended before yoga, but it is particularly important with Aerial. Avoid eating or drinking acidic liquids an hour prior to class. Please observe good personal hygiene and wear deodorant in consideration for the next person using the hammock.
Please talk to the instructor before attending class if you have any medical issues that prevent you from inverting (glaucoma, heart condition, etc.) or putting pressure on your skin. If you have a spinal injury or medical condition, check with your doctor first.
Intro to Aerial Yoga, Restorative Aerial Yoga, or a private lesson is required before attending any other Aerial classes. Aerial Yoga Series are also available throughout the year. Privates & semi-privates may be booked.
Aerial Yoga Class Descriptions
Intro to Aerial Yoga- This class is required before moving on to more advanced classes. This fun class will help you establish a solid foundation in this unique system. It is designed to give you a secure and detailed understanding of Aerial Yoga fundamentals while enjoying a new perspective on the world! Aerial Yoga uses a soft fabric hammock that supports up to a 1000 pound to suspend practitioners while they do Yoga poses. The Yoga hammock is hung close to the floor so that students can use the prop to either partially or fully support the weight of the body. Many Aerial postures are designed to help the student create more space in the body, and a flow thru traditional Yoga postures. PRE-REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED. You may sign up online or call to register. NOTE: Students should plan to arrive at least 15 minutes before class.
Beginners Level Aerial Yoga- Beginners AY is not an intro class. Although this class will still be simple & detailed enough that all students can handle it; it will not teach students the fundamental aspects of aerial yoga that are learned in an Intro to Aerial Yoga Series. Beginners AY will be a more diverse class than intro and more instruction will be given according to the basics of the practice. Modifications and props will be given to make sure all practitioners are comfortable in the class and able to relax into simple poses with ease.
Intermediate Level Aerial Yoga- Deepen your aerial practice & explore more advanced moves in Intermediate Level AY. Intermediate Level AY is a more advanced class than all the levels taught at Kaya. There will be less basic instruction and more of an emphasis on challenging material where the instructor will assume you have a certain amount of familiarity with the practice. Intro to Aerial Yoga is required before taking this class and participation in either Mixed Level, Yin Aerial, Restorative Aerial and/or Beginners Aerial Yoga preferred before taking this advanced class.
Mixed Level Aerial Yoga- Deepen your aerial practice & explore more advanced moves in this open-level class. At least one Intro to Aerial class is required.
Restorative Aeriel Yoga- In this Restorative Class you will use a soft fabric hammock that supports up to a 1000 pound to move through a series of restorative poses that will rejuvenate and deeply relax your nervous system. The hammock will be hung close to the floor so that students can use the prop to either partially or fully support the weight of the body. The support of the fabric will allow you to move into postures that might otherwise be unavailable to your body type. Come and say bye to the winter blues and welcome the lovely spring with a long savasana as you are cocooned in our hammock! You may sign up online or call to register. NOTE: Students should plan to arrive at least 15 minutes before class.
Yin Aerial Yoga-Yin AY is an aerial yoga class suitable for almost all levels of students, though Intro to Aerial Yoga is required before taking this class. Yin Yoga is a perfect complement to the dynamic and muscular (yang) styles of yoga that emphasize internal heat and the lengthening and contracting of our muscles. Yin Yoga generally targets the connective tissues of the hips, pelvis, and lower spine and poses are held longer allowing the body and soul to fully surrender into the posture.

Unnata Aerial Yoga
Unnata Aerial Yoga is also offered by private instruction, individual or group, by Heather Shafer at both locations. Begun in January, 2006 by Michelle Dortignac, the Unnata approach is very yoga minded and inspired. More like a traditional yoga class integrating the hammock prop to increase the benefits of the Asanas (postures); versus other aerial approaches, where the hammock & flying is the focus. In an Unnata Aerial Yoga class, we identify areas where tension (and stress) is chronically held, and use the hammock to help us release those areas of chronic tension. The result is relaxation of our nervous system, and an ability to tie the benefits of your aerial practice more fully into your floor practice.
